From the board

In our board meeting via Skype on December 12th 2011 we discussed again our website (coming soon!), our contribution to the FutureEverything Festival 2012 (see Digital Manufacturers Unite!) and our intentions to spread the Fab Lab word in international communities, e.g. on learning/education as well as some governance issues.

Our next board meeting has been scheduled for January 9th 2012. We will send you our January Newsletter one week later.

Season’s greetings and best wishes for 2012!

Picture of the month [november’s]

The picture in the November issue of our Newsletter was the bronze statue of Amida Buddha (height 13 m), which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple in Kamakura, Japan. The friendly and creative city of Kamakura (less than one hour by train from Tokyo center) houses not only the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, but also the first Japanese Fab Lab. That is the link we asked for.

The Kamakura Fab Lab is housed in a small and beautiful traditional Japanese house. The crew is full of energy and creativity. When in 2013 the Fab community will travel all the way to Kamakura to celebrate Fab9, they might be surprised by finding not only a Fab Lab but also a Fab City there.

Our association finally got its bank and PayPal account. Now you no longer have to wait sending us your money J. We urgently want to pay off a loan for notary and sworn translator (constitution) and need money to pay our expenses. Please, consider a generous payment to cover:

* Your membership fee for 2011 – you have no obligations to pay a membership fee for 2011, but still paying let’s say EUR 20 for 2011 is greatly appreciated!

* Your membership fee for 2012 – this is compulsory, the amount is EUR 20 per person; if paying is a problem, please contact our treasurer Betty Barrett

* Any additional gifts, especially to cover the initial costs of establishing our association.

In our board meeting via Skype on November 14th, we discussed the ongoing efforts to find a nice web solution for the association. As an association we need a place of our own to publish and collaborate. Where other sites in our Fab Lab community offer centralized information already, we will link to it. Of course this Newsletter will be linked to the site as well. If people want to subscribe, they are kindly invited to become a member of our association. :)

Our next board meeting has been scheduled for December 12th. We will send you our next Newsletter one week later.

What are you seeing, where on earth is this found and what is its relation with 3D-printing? The answer will be revealed in our next issue.

The picture of the October 2011 Newsletter shows the winning design in the Fab7 contest in Lima, Peru (August 2011). Sorry, we have no names. The goal of this contest was to develop a new point of sale for so-called ambulantes: street vendors with a movable booth. On the last day of Fab7 all participants went to the riverside around sunset. On a crowded place, our Fab ambulantes joined about 20 regular ones, watched by a few hundred people walking there around. A mixed jury of Fab folk and regular ambulantes decided that the banana angel with Inca-like wings was the winner. ¡Congratulations!

[12.12.2011] algorithmic design workshop ecoLogicStudio

Martes, Diciembre 6th, 2011

covers-02.jpg
Info: http://algorithmicdesignworkshops.wordpress.com/2011/10/04/102/

Can the dichotomy between obsessive tooling and strong design agenda be overcome? Can innovative software like Grasshopper be the ideal platform to marry computation, creativity and ecological thinking? What can be done to speed up the process? Algorithmic Design Workshops is a platform created by ecoLogicStudio to engage these questions introducing novel parametric modeling techniques in the context of architecture and landscape design. Each event will be a opportunity for learning design techniques, testing new methods and debating their potential applications or evolution. Architects, Landscape architects, urban designers and students alike will find in the workshops a unique opportunity to improve their technical skills while confronting themselves with the most debated advanced design subjects.

Smooth Spaces workshop [12-17 december, London]

This workshop, particularly suitable for applicants with a preliminary knowledge of grasshopper, offers the opportunity to engage with advanced modelling techniques with main focus on meshes.

The aim of the workshop is the creation of continuous spaces defined by gradual morphological variation rather than linear boundaries. The workshop will start with the generation of a series of 2-dimensional virtual patterns of occupancy within a defined space. These patterns will be generated through the use of associative systems of relationship embedded in the space. As a second step the participants will learn how to use gradient fields [maps, highfields, attractor points…] to create 3-dimensional continuous differentiations in the virtual pattern previously generated. The combinatorial effects of intensive differences [gradients] and extensive articulation [virtual pattern] will lead to the creation of a series of morphological variations [foldings, extrusions, pleats…] that will be explored through the use of meshes and related grasshopper plugins such as Weaverbird and MeshEdit.

[02.12.2011] Gramazio & Kohler con R. D’Andrea: fabricación digital con robots volantes

Domingo, Diciembre 4th, 2011

Domingo, Diciembre 4th, 2011

El pasado 30 de noviembre Vicente Guallart, director del área de urbnismo del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona y Neil Gershenfeld, director del Center for Bit and Atoms del MIT y principal promotor de la Fab Lab Network hablaron sobre urbanismo y Fab Labs en el Smart City World Congress “Smart Society for Innovative and Sustainable Cities” celebrado en la capital catalana.

De la noticia publicada en chinadaily.com:

Guallart briefly sketched the model, which is based on five major systems: Information, Water, Energy, Mobility and Production. This last area, where cities must generate jobs to continue attracting residents, could serve as the target for the surprising proposals of Neil Gershenfeld and the Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA), a research center at MIT that he directs. The CBA is the birthplace of initiatives like Fab Labs, factories in which state-of-the-art machines and digital technology are used to manufacture objects. Fab Labs could spark a veritable urban revolution to reverse the general trend of cities losing industrial production over the past half-century” […]

Proposals such as Fab Labs offer urban centers that have spent years striving to be completely post-industrial, the chance to become industrial again. “Instead of taking jobs out of cities, this new Industrial Revolution would see all the products consumed by citizens of a particular area produced locally,” said Gershenfeld. In this way, he continued, cities would finally become truly self-sufficient, a scenario that he described as “a solution to avoid the economic and ecological disaster of the current global production system”.
